It has been a struggle to get society to take common genetic alopecia seriously. However, I do believe we have been quite successful, for the most part, doing that now. Mainstream websites are using our information.

Unfortunately, in some cases people come to us after they have been burned by the hair loss industry. We have about 55% of those who come here being women. They seek our help for information on hair loss. However, we don’t focus on surgery. This has enabled a much broader and bigger platform.

The doctors that are listed on the AHLA have to be recommended by the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons.

My hair loss was pretty gradual. In my early twenties I noticed a change. As a kid I had a lot of hair – I went from a head full of hair to noticeably thinning hair. I suppose it was difficult. It definitely didn’t make me feel good.

Yes, it was definitely worth it. Superficially speaking, apparently I look younger. Also, apparently I look “healthier” even though my health has not in any way changed. It’s amazing how much of a difference a little hair can make.

“I was totally relaxed during my procedure”

There was absolutely no pain during my hair restoration procedure. I felt very relaxed and comfortable.

After the procedure, I followed all of Dr. Rahal’s instructions. I kept my life very simple for two weeks. I did not touch the grafts and followed all of his directives.

In general, my daily life was not affected too much, although there were some obvious restrictions.  I was recovering from hair transplant surgery after all!

“I’m 25-years old, working towards finishing my Medical Degree, and I live in Ottawa, ON.

I go to the gym three times a week, and in my spare time, I play the guitar, and travel as much as possible.

So far, I have been to Thailand and the Philippines (both three times), Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Laos, South Korea and New Zealand.

How did hair loss make you feel?

Hair loss was a crushing blow to my self-esteem. I was only 19-years old when I first noticed it, and I’m now 25. People would often comment on my very noticeably receding hairline. It caused me to become extremely depressed.

I’m a young guy, but my hair loss was aging me badly. It made me feel older and less than other men at my age – almost like I had been singled out and isolated. I felt mortified.

What made you decide to do something about it?

To prevent the hair loss comments from hurting me, I hid away indoors. I avoided going out as much as possible and I certainly didn’t venture out to bars. I guess I was embarrassed about how I looked. In retrospect, it was stupid. But back then, it really reduced my quality of life.

I was in my early years of university – the prime time of building new relationships – and I barely had a social life. I was too scared to get involved in any personal relationships because I despised what I saw when I looked in the mirror. How could anybody else love me when I had so many flaws?

This was a very dark period in my life.

Imagine you are only 14-years old, already limited by teenage insecurities and potential bullies in high school – and on top of that – you’re going bald. This was the case for Mark (not his real name), who found himself singled out and excluded from his peers because of a receding hairline.

Mark had to stand by and watch helplessly as his hair loss got worse. Robbed of his youth and stripped of his confidence, it became a struggle to talk to girls or even participate in sports. It was not until years later, now in his late twenties, that Mark had a wake-up call. It was time to reverse the curse.

“I’m 30-years old, working as an accountant, and I live in Tanzania.

After work, I play and watch soccer. During the weekends I enjoy visiting the cinema especially during the big Hollywood summer blockbuster season. I also like to read fantasy novels, my favorites being ‘The Lord of The Rings’ and ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series.

How did hair loss make you feel?

In high school, not only did I have to cope with teenage insecurities and potential bullies – on top of that – I was going bald. At only 14 years old I felt devastated because of my appearance. I thought how could this be happening to me? I am far too young for this curse.

My hair loss inhibited my life. Instead of attending events and socializing like normal teenagers, I hid at home. I was too afraid to talk to girls because I looked so awkward, and I feared they would laugh at me.

My thinning hair also curtailed a lot of my outdoor activities. The weather began dictating my day. If it was windy, too much sunlight or raining outside I would stay indoors. The worst activity was swimming. You could really see my scalp when my hair was wet, so I stopped swimming altogether.

When I was 16-years old, I started using Minoxidil. Growing up in Africa, you are limited with options when it comes to hair loss treatments. The few available are very expensive. I had to go to an upscale pharmacy. I eventually had to quit taking Minoxidil. It was too expensive for me at that age.

In 2005, I left Africa and went to Toronto for my studies. I started using a hair loss treatment called Propecia. I was about 22-years old at the time. Propecia made a huge difference in terms of maintaining my hair. However, I still wanted to find a permanent solution.

What made you decide to do something about it?

I hit a wall. I was missing out on the best years of my life – the prime time of my youth and getting involved in relationships. Hair loss was inhibiting my life and aging me before my time.

This was my wake-up call.

Mike gets two thumbs up from his golfing buddy for his new thick and healthy hair.

Growing up, Mike always got complimented for his thick and healthy hair. Through his hair, Mike felt confident and had an outgoing personality. But, deep-down Mike had a gut-wrenching feeling that the family tradition of hair loss would eventually catch up with him.

“My name is Mike. I’m 38-years old and married with two little girls. I run a landscaping company in Toronto, and have about 15 to 20 employees that work for me.

In the summer I am a budding golfer. My putting isn’t too bad. I did once hit a sizzling five-iron which soared over the trees taking my spirits with it. But, between the passable shots there are always several absolute horrors with no rhythm. Golf is undeniably my favorite hobby.

How did hair loss make you feel?

My grandfather (on my mother’s side) suffered from balding, and deep down I had that gut-wrenching feeling that it would eventually happen to me.

I tackled my hair loss by joking about it with work colleagues. I thought that if I joked about my situation then people wouldn’t attack me first. This grew into paranoia. I always felt my workers were staring at my head.

I eventually decided to ask one of my trusted neighbors for advice about my thinning hair. The front part of my hair was 85% gone. So I was worried what he would suggest. My neighbor told me that if I decided to go down the route of a hair transplant, it was not too late. That was a relief to hear.

I told my wife. My wife was not bothered by my thinning hair, but the thought of losing any more strands plagued my mind. My wife advised me to go ahead and have a hair transplant if losing my hair was bothering me that much.

“I am 51-years old, living in Ottawa and retired.

Unfortunately, I have medical condition (ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia) that restricts my activities a great deal. Fibromyalgia causes pain in my tendons and ligaments, along with the side effects of fatigue.

When did you notice your eyebrows thinning?

In 2002, I noticed my eyebrows were getting thinner. I had suspected thyroid issues at the time, so I think it correlated. It was a gradual thinning over the years. Then in 2008 you could barely discern my brows.

How did it make you feel?

Losing my eyebrows was gradual, but once they were truly gone, I felt devastated. Every time I looked in the mirror I saw a faded and deficient woman staring back. It wasn’t me. I was struggling with my illness – and on top of that – now I had no eyebrows.

My brows were always a distinctive feature that shaped my face. They would accentuate my eyes, and soften my expression. They were a key part of my femininity. Losing my brows added to my distress that I was already feeling due to my illness. I felt bad, and I looked awful.

Carol felt like she was being robbed of her femininity when her brows gradually disappeared as a result of an illness. It was an extremely distressing time.

What made you decide to do something about it?

I spent around 10 minutes every single morning penciling my brows on, just to look human. As I didn’t have any hair at all, the pencil had nothing to blend into, so they just looked painted on and very unnatural.

What eyebrow products or treatments did you try?

I tried to fake my eyebrows by using pencils and concealers, but it didn’t work well. The other treatments I looked up online seemed iffy. I decided to investigate for a permanent solution. Once I met Dr. Rahal, I knew this was how I was going to get my eyebrows back.

How did you find Dr. Rahal?

Thank you for your question. Rahal FUE™ is the least invasive and fastest-healing hair transplant available and allows patients to have newer, edgy hair styles like the one you asked about because the linear scar, typical of a Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) procedures, is not present.

Keep in mind that the hair model in the photo you provided has a true “full head of hair”, which is not possible (nor required) due to the sheer numbers of grafts necessary to achieve this. When I’m talking about a full head of hair, I’m talking about the original density throughout your scalp before your hair loss began.

There is a simple formula that some doctors use that calculates how many grafts are needed for any given case…

This formula says that for every Norwood level that a patient is classified under they will need 1000 grafts. This formula would dictate that you need 4000 grafts.

However, I find this formula to be lacking in that it does not take into account hair characteristics such as hair caliber (fine, coarse, wavy, straight) – nor does it take into account the density requirements of the patient.

It is generally meant to calculate what is necessary for good coverage. It’s a fair starting point. But I would never utilize this formula across the board because every patient is unique and no single blanket approach is appropriate.

I am 24 years, male, live at new delhi, India. My hair loss started after i straightened my hair (i regret it till now). Suffering hair loss since 5 years. Initially lost temples and crown is thinning. Very depressing situation. Consulted a doctor and on medication some vitamins supplements and foltene, kairfall and bontrex lotion to apply. My hair loss stop by applying these but when i leave it starts again. I want to have my thick and full head of hair again. Can you recommend anything?

Dear Akash,

Hair loss due to chemical straightening is not uncommon because either the chemicals are left on the hair for too long or the treatments are performed too often.

However, sometimes this issue coincides with the beginnings of normal male patterned hair loss so the two problems can be interchanged and the underlying cause of the loss may be misinterpreted.

Regardless, your problem can be addressed in two ways…

FDA-Approved medications…

The vitamin supplements that you are taking are most likely only moderately helpful at best and they certainly are not a cure as evidenced by your hair loss starting again once you stop taking the vitamins. Unfortunately no medication can permanently halt your hair loss with only temporary use because if any medication could do this then it would be considered to be a cure.

I have found that while vitamin supplements can help make hair stronger overall they are not nearly as effective as proper hair loss medications such as Rogaine and Propecia for men. In India you can find Propecia under the name “Finpecia”. This is the single most effective medication you can take to not only stop your hair loss but to potentially reverse it to at least a small degree.

You must take Finpecia and/or Rogaine consistently or the effectiveness will diminish and disappear because, as I mentioned above, these are treatments only. The cure in medicinal form is still elusive.

Surgical hair restoration…

Rahal Mega Session™ is the process whereby a long narrow “strip” of skin tissue is removed from the back and sides of your scalp. This strip is subdivided into smaller pieces known as “slivers” then further dissected through the use of stereoscopic microscopes into their naturally occurring follicular bundles.
